On January 31, 2024, a 1999 silver Saab 900 was reported stolen from Nelchina Street. The vehicle was located on February 6, 2024, on Bragaw Street. Inside, a man and a woman were found unconscious. The man, identified as 35-year-old Joseph F. Ahgeak, fled the scene, carrying a handgun.
Ahgeak locked himself in a nearby apartment complex. The police were allowed entry by the residents and directed to the third floor. Witnesses reported Ahgeak was armed. A handgun was found in a fire extinguisher box during the search.
A break-in was reported at the same apartment where the gun was found. The door was open, and the residents allowed the police to search the apartment. Ahgeak was found in a closet and detained without incident. He had forced entry into the apartment, causing damage. The residents, a man and his three children, were safe.
Ahgeak was taken to the Anchorage Police Department. He showed signs of a drug overdose and was hospitalized. After medical clearance, he was taken to the Anchorage Correctional Complex on existing warrants and new charges, including violation of release conditions, weapon misconduct, resisting arrest, vehicle theft, burglary, theft, and criminal mischief. Fentanyl pills were found on Ahgeak during processing, leading to an additional charge.
