More than 22,000 without power in Anchorage after load shedding event

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – More than 22,000 Chugach Electric customers were without power as of 7 p.m. Friday night. Chugach Electric confirmed to Alaska’s News Source at 7:35 Friday night that the outage impacting their customers was from a load shedding event, which is a type of widespread outage caused by a major generation source being lost along the Railbelt. Chugach explained after a previous load shedding event in August customers may occasionally be “shed” in order to prevent a larger-scale loss of power.
