Iditarod Day 5: Jessie Holmes leads as Iditarod mushers push toward halfway mark

On day five of the 53rd Iditarod, mushers and their dogs are making their way toward the halfway point in this grueling race.

This year’s Iditarod features the longest route in race history—stretching an incredible 1,128 miles. That means the official halfway mark would be around 564 miles, somewhere between the Eagle Island 1 and Grayling 1 checkpoints.

As of Friday, top mushers were pushing forward through Galena and Nulato. Leading the pack, Jessie Holmes had reached Kaltag, where he was taking his mandatory 24-hour rest…
