Flames engulf the abandoned church at the Nunapitsinghak Moravian Children’s Home during a controlled burn of the property on March 5, 2025.
On an otherwise uneventful Wednesday (March 5), three men sat on snowmachines on a raised patch of tundra looking out toward the frozen Kwethluk River. In front of them, dark clouds of smoke rose up from an area choked with willows and alders, the site of the old Moravian Children’s Home. Most of the structures that remained were being burned to the ground.
