‘A targeted tree’: Eagles nest vanishes from Anchorage neighborhood, questions remain

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Many eagles call the area around Kincaid Elementary School home but one nest mysteriously vanished this week after neighborhood residents discovered the tree it inhabited was cut down, with no nest in sight.

No other trees in the area appeared to have been cut down recently, which is why resident Eric Pickens said he believes the tree was targeted for the nest.

“It’s a federal offense, it should still be standing there,” Pickens said.

Eagles are protected under federal law. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act prohibits anyone from taking eagles or their nests without a permit. Those in violation can face fines of up to $100,000, prison time, or both…
