Seawolves soar on vault at MPSF meet

ANCHORAGE (Mar. 22) – Seniors Montana Fairbairn and Grace Costello posted solid three-event efforts Saturday to pace the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to a strong vault performance and a 191.875 team total in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex.

The Seawolves finished fourth in the competition behind No. 23 Southern Utah (196.625), UC Davis (196.400) and Sacramento State (193.850). Southern Utah defended its title and tied its own meet record score from last year, getting a 39.425 all-around from Niya Randolph and a 39.275 all-around from Brinlee Christensen. UC Davis star Amelia Moneymaker was the all-around (39.500), beam (9.9) and bars (9.9) champion, helping the Aggies to a season-high team score and a possible NCAA Regionals berth.

UAA’s vault total of 48.500 matched the ninth-best figure in program history, led by a 9.75 from Fairbairn and a career-high 9.75 from freshman Hannah Boyd. Freshman Verena Wong tied her personal best with 9.7, along with 9.65s from Costello and freshman Maribelle Albert…
