Alaskans rush to apply for PFD as Seward’s Day marks final filing deadline

Monday marked Seward’s Day in Alaska, a holiday that celebrates the United States’ purchase of Alaska from Russia. While many state offices were closed in observance of the holiday, Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) offices remained open to accommodate last-minute filers.

Monday was the final day to apply for this year’s PFD, and Your Alaska Link found a steady line of last-minute filers outside the PFD office in downtown Anchorage.

“I think it’s a great thing for the people. It helps the people. It helps the poor people that don’t have money, and those who do have money, it gives them a little incentive to stay here,” said one Alaska resident…
