Pets given gas masks as US residents prepare for volcano to erupt

Pet owners have been snapping up gas masks for their dogs in Alaska as they prepare for a colossal volcanic eruption .

Mount Spurr, an 11,000-foot stratovolcano situated 81 miles west of Anchorage , has started to release increased levels of gas from its summit and a side vent, which last erupted in 1992.

These emissions marked a new stage in the volcano’s eruption build-up which began in April 2024 when minor earthquakes suggested magma was ascending towards its vents . In its most recent update, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) said the “unrest” was continuing at the volcano. The agency also said that the “seismicity” levels remained “elevated” with ” small, shallow volcanic earthquakes detected beneath the volcano.”

Now residents from the surrounding towns, which include Beluga, Tyonek, and Nikiski, are taking new measures to ensure their beloved pooches are unaffected when the volcano finally blows. Others in Anchorage are also stocking up amid fears that ash and dust could cover the major hub. One pet store, called AK Bark, based in the city, revealed they were stocking gas masks for dogs following customer orders…
