Search underway for missing ski mountaineer on Mount McKinley

Search efforts are underway for a missing ski mountaineer on Mount McKinley’s West Buttress.

On Monday, two members of a three-person expedition reported that an unroped ski mountaineer had fallen at a location known as Squirrel Point. The 41-year-old man fell toward the Peters Glacier, an exposed and treacherous area featuring a 3,000-foot rocky and serac-covered face.

After witnessing the fall, the two expedition members attempted to lower themselves over the edge to locate the fallen skier but were unable to see or hear him. They then descended the West Buttress route to seek additional help and have since safely returned to Camp 1. There, they are being cared for by a ranger team…
