Anchorage police are warning the public about a rise in text message scams that are targeting local residents by pretending to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, scammers are sending out fake text messages claiming to be from the DMV. The messages include a so-called “final notice,” threatening that if you don’t pay a fine immediately, your vehicle registration and driving privileges will be suspended.
But police say it’s all a scam. The messages contain fake links and are part of a broader trend known as “smishing”—or SMS phishing. These scams aim to steal your personal and financial information by tricking you into clicking harmful links or replying with sensitive data…
