Shipwreck of famed explorer to Alaska found in the U.S.

After over 200 years of sitting in a watery grave, researchers have confirmed the discovery of the fabled HMS Endeavor, the ship that carried Captain James Cook and crew on his first journey. The discovery, outlined in a report from the Australian National Maritime Museum, was the culmination of nearly three decades of archeological research by both American and Australian historians and archaeologists. While Endeavor is not the ship Cook would have sailed to Alaska with, it brings experts closer to understanding the globe-trotting captain. “It’s unusual of course for it to be on the East Coast because we think of what Cook did on his third voyage, was in the Pacific,” Cook Historian and Author Jim Barnett said. “But the ship was ultimately taken back and scuttled at about the time of the American Revolution.”
