‘Not uncommon:’ USCG comments on Chinese Research Vessel detected near Utqiagvik in July

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District said a situation similar to what we saw a little over a week ago, where a Chinese Research Vessel was seen off the coast of Alaska, is not uncommon.

The vessel, the Xue Long 2, was detected on the U.S. extended continental shelf (ECS) around 300 miles north of Utqiagvik and about 150 miles inside the ECS boundary where the U.S. claims exclusive rights to manage and conserve the region, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
