AROUND ALASKA: Bridge Repairs, Recreation Upgrades, and Pet Adoptions!

Significant progress is being made on repairs in Juneau, where the Glacial Lake outburst flood took down a bridge. The Alaska Department of Transportation says crews have now excavated over 22 feet of debris. Now, they’re beginning to rebuild and move in rocks for stability. Once the riverbanks have been repaired and the supports strengthened, crews will reopen the bridge. They’re hoping it will happen by next Tuesday.

Girdwood Fire and Rescue is looking for paid, on-call firefighters. Recruits must be 18 years of age or older with a valid Alaska driver’s license. Candidates can apply online between August 24 and September 8.

Work is continuing at the Deep Creek State Recreation Area. Crews will start paving after Labor Day. The hope is to help visitors launch their boats faster, reducing backups onto the Sterling Highway. A kiosk will also be built near the boat launch…
