AROUND ALASKA: Totem Dedication, Dock Closure, and Iditarod Rookie!

Glacier Bay National Park is now home to two new totem poles. Park officials say the two totem poles were brought to life, raised, and named during a day-long dedication ceremony. One is called the “Our Grandparents’ Land Totem Pole” and the other — “Our Grandparents’ Ocean Totem Pole.” You can find them at the road entrance to the park and at the dock in Barlett Cove.

A ribbon cutting was recently held in Unalaska to celebrate the Dutch Harbor Channels Project. Officials say this marks a critical milestone for ship traffic both in and out of Dutch Harbor. And the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says work was completed 54 days ahead of schedule.

It’s a sign that winter will soon be here. The Alaska Department of Transportation shared a photo saying the time has come to remove the harbor docks in Ninilchik. Any boats still in the harbor must be removed by September 18…
