Preparing your home for winter fire safety

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – It’s time to start thinking about getting ready for winter fire safety.

In an interview Wednesday, Anchorage Fire Mashall Brian Dean said he recommends tuning up your furnace, checking fluids, keeping space heaters plugged into their own outlets, and making sure your chimneys are clean. He said it is also important to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

“If there is a buildup of carbon monoxide, they’ll go off and alert you. Call the fire department, don’t try to investigate yourself, that’s what we’re here for. We’ll come and investigate it. We’ll actually run test equipment in the home to determine whether, one, the detector is working properly, and two, what the actual co levels are in the house.”…
