ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Former state Rep. Andrew Halcro said he started volunteering in his neighborhood school as a retirement project two years ago. He fell in love with students and staff at Sand Lake Elementary, but especially the library where he could watch young readers grow.
Halcro said it wasn’t long before he started imagining what could improve the experience at the library .
“I’d go home at night and I’d talk to my wife about how, this is cool but this could be changed. So after a couple of months I ended up having a conversation with the librarian and we kind of came together on this great idea to do this.”
He worked with the school to poll students on what they did and didn’t like about the space and what they wanted to see more of. Halcro took that information and decided to make the redesign of the library a personal project. The timing, he said, seemed right…
