ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Alaska Department of Transportation crews began work Monday to repair the Rabbit Creek pedestrian overpass over the Seward Highway.
The bridge’s roof and sides were ripped off the overpass during a mid-January windstorm, affecting about 40 students at nearby Rabbit Creek Elementary School, who used the overpass to walk to and from school.
Justin Shelby, a spokesperson with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, told Alaska’s News Source that they had to adjust the design slightly to make the new steel structure safer. The new structure was fabricated out of state.
“We’ll be closing one lane of the Seward Highway at a time as they make their way across the bridge, so drivers should expect minor delays,” Shelby said. “We’re going to avoid impacting the rush hour traffic. But do check 511.alaska.gov for the latest updates on the traffic impacts.”
The overpass was built in 1972. Repairs are estimated to be complete in late November…
