Williwaw Lakes Trail Gets Major Upgrade in Chugach State Park

Outdoor enthusiasts heading to Chugach State Park this fall will notice a big change on one of Anchorage’s favorite trails. The Williwaw Lakes Trail has received a major makeover, thanks to a 13-week effort by an Alaska Trails paid crew dedicated to improving access and protecting the environment.

The team spent the summer rerouting and reinforcing the popular trail to make it safer, more sustainable, and more enjoyable for hikers of all levels. The upgrades include:

  • 2,490 feet of trail rerouted to higher, drier ground to prevent erosion.
  • 160 feet of new step-and-run boardwalk built across soggy terrain.
  • 28 drainage features dug to divert water off the trail.
  • 6 new rock steps and armored roots added for stability and safe footing.
  • Retired trail sections covered and re-seeded, helping natural vegetation recover.

The project was made possible through the Chugach Park Fund, a partnership between Alaska State Parks, Alaska Trails, and local supporters who continue to invest in the state’s outdoor spaces.
