AROUND ALASKA: Virtual Training, New Mayor, and Road Closure!

Virtual reality is being used as a tool to train Village Public Safety Officers. Tlingit & Haida says the tribe has invested in Operator XR virtual reality training. This places officers in real-life scenarios to virtually practice decision-making in high-pressure situations. As of last year, there were over 70 Village Public Safety officers working in Alaska.

The new mayor for the City of Fairbanks is marking one full week on the job. Mayor Cindy O’Neall was officially sworn in on Monday, October 27. She shared a note on social media reading in part, “My door is always open… This is our Golden Heart City, and the best progress happens when we shape it together.”

Attention Hatcher Pass lovers: Archangel Road is now closed to vehicles for the winter. State transportation officials say they’re waiting on more snow cover so that snowmachining and other winter activities can get underway…
