Soup for SNAP: Nonprofit and unions share a meal amid call for action

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A variety of nonprofits and unions, including the 907 Initiative, were outside the Alaska state delegation’s office on Thursday afternoon, serving soup and calling for action. The event, called Soup for SNAP, comes just shy of a week since the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expired amid the government shutdown.

“There are a lot of people that do not have the access to food that they have come to depend on and need,” Aubrey Wieber, 907 Initiative Executive Director, said.

According to Feeding America, in 2023, 43% of the Anchorage population fell below the SNAP threshold of a monthly income at or below 130% of the federal poverty line…
