‘Not a hurdle we expected to face,’ Fire Lake Elementary faces another year on the chopping block

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Nearly 70 people showed up on Tuesday night at the Anchorage School District (ASD) School Board meeting, ready to share their testimony regarding the proposed school closures. This comes after the district announced last month that it was proposing to close Lake Otis Elementary in Anchorage and Fire Lake Elementary in Eagle River next school year.

“I’m from a small town. I know what it’s like to be in a small community and to have a small group of friends, and that’s exactly what Lake Otis Elementary is doing with all of these children,” Shannon Bulua, a Lake Otis parent, said. “It’s a wonderful thing. It’s giving them stability.”

According to the district, the proposed closures are part of what the district has coined ‘Rightsizing ASD”. It’s an agenda that the district began exploring in April of 2024…
