Alaska high school wrestling world comes together for yearly Lancer Smith Memorial tournament

WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) – For the 23rd year running, the Menard Center in Wasilla played host to the biggest wrestling tournament in the state of Alaska over the weekend.

Teams from every corner of the state gathered for the yearly Lancer Smith Memorial tournament: a two-day wrestling gauntlet aptly bearing the name of the sport’s foremost pioneer in the Last Frontier.

“In our sport, when you say Lancer Smith, you’re talking about an individual who loved wrestling,” Palmer assistant wrestling coach Don Malone said. “He was a hard-working man and loved this sport so much, and that’s why we honor him. It’s kind of the epitome of what we like to see in a high school coach.”…
