AROUND ALASKA: School Transformation, Ice Training, and Iditarod Teacher Deadline!

A former middle school in Juneau will soon get a new purpose. Tlingit & Haida has partnered with the City and Borough of Juneau to expand early childhood education and offer other opportunities for young people. The tribe plans to bring three Head Start classrooms, along with its LEARN and youth programs, under one roof at the former Floyd Dryden Middle School. Remodeling work — now underway — should be complete by January.

Firefighters in Anchorage have been braving the cold to do some ice rescue training. The ice may seem thick enough to walk on in spots, but you never know what could happen. AFD says firefighters stand at the ready to help, no matter how cold it may be.
