Halong storm survivor shares perspective on displacement from Kipnuk

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Months after being forced to evacuate her hometown in Western Alaska after a strong storm ripped through the area, a Kipnuk resident spoke about the cleanup efforts in her village unfolding hundreds of miles away.

Rayna Paul, whose home was among many washed away during the remnants of Typhoon Halong that struck Western Alaska in the overnight hours on Oct. 11-12, now finds herself displaced and adjusting to an unfamiliar environment.

“This is the first time I’m displaced, and it’s a big adjustment, I think,” Paul said Thursday. ”Because I have to adjust to another different environment that I’m not familiar with.”

Paul says she has heard there are about 30 crew members in Kipnuk working on communications towers and making other repairs. She said contractors are working to repair damage to buildings and restore power to structures deemed safe…
