State gives deadline for owners of Western Alaskan dogs evacuated from Halong to claim their pets

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Western Alaskans who had to leave their dogs behind after ex-Typhoon Halong devastated the region in October have until Monday to claim them or the animals will be spayed or neutered and made available for adoption, according to the State Veterinarian’s office.

State Veterinarian Dr. Sarah Coburn said many of the 200 dogs that were evacuated from flooded villages have been reunited with their owners or are in foster care, but there are some animals, she said, where no one has come forward at all.

“There’s about 20 or 25 that no one’s claimed, that no one’s mentioned that they might know who the owner is, so these dogs have just been safe and sound with some foster homes or in the shelters in Anchorage or Mat-Su,” Coburn said.

Coburn said it’s important to keep open space in the shelter and animal foster care system and, ideally, to unite the Western Alaskan animals with their families…
