Most dogs from Western Alaska accounted for after weekend deadline

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A weekend deadline for owners to claim their dogs that were evacuated after Typhoon Halong has come and gone with most animals are now accounted for, according to Anchorage Animal Care and Control Community Outreach Manager Joel Jorgensen.

“We had four people contact us where we were able to get ownership claimed, and then I know, in contact with the rescues, they had quite a few calls as well on their end,” Jorgensen said. “ I know there’s a couple of stragglers that didn’t get claimed but I mean, them being from the villages, they could have just been a stray dog that was wandering around there without an owner.”

Of the 200 plus dogs that were evacuated, Anchorage Animal Care and Control received 61. Jorgensen said almost all were placed in foster care with rescue groups and about half of those have been reunited with their owners…
