State says ‘we need to do better’ after cutting $18.7 million in Anchorage roadway projects

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The safety of Anchorage roads has long been scrutinized, but on Wednesday evening the state pulled $18.7 million in safety funding from the city—less than 24 hours before Anchorage assembly members were set to discuss the state of transportation.

“Until the … analyses required by that directive are completed, it would not be appropriate to include projects with these specific scopes in the HSIP funding plan,” according to a document from state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Commissioner Ryan Anderson.

Roads not receiving the federal funds include Ingra and Gambell Streets, Northern Lights Blvd., Mountain View Dr. and A Street. Some of those projects would remove old signal poles and mast arms on Gambell and Ingra Streets, widen sidewalks to make Northern Lights Boulevard ADA-compliant and remove a lane on Fireweed Lane and 9th Avenue…
