I didn’t grow up in a cold climate, so winter sports were never part of my life. That said, I love vacationing in places that get lots of snow, but learning to ski as an adult is just a bit too far outside my comfort zone. But snow tubing? That’s something I can get behind. Arctic Valley Ski Area in Anchorage offers the best snow tubing in Alaska, and it’s the perfect winter activity for the whole family.
Open in summer and winter, Arctic Valley Ski Area is run by volunteers from the Anchorage Ski Club. In the summer, the park offers scenic chairlift rides and serves as a venue for weddings and other events. But come winter, when the mountains are covered in fresh powder, it becomes one of the top destinations for winter fun in Anchorage. Of course, you can ski here, but for families and those seeking a more leisurely activity, the Arctic Valley Tube Park lets you experience the same winter wonderland without any skills or training.
The tube park is open Thursday through Sunday (plus some school holidays) from the Saturday after Thanksgiving through the second Saturday in April, conditions allowing. There are four available time slots on Thursdays and Fridays, and five on the weekends. The slope is gentle enough that kids as young as three can tube safely while still providing a fun experience for adults. Only one person is allowed per tube, but parents can hold onto younger kids’ tubes on the way down.
Feel the thrill of anticipation as you make your way to the top of the hill while listening to the laughter and delighted shrieks of other tubers descending. When it’s finally your turn, you’ll wish you could bottle the excitement that comes before taking the plunge. As you gain momentum and snow gets kicked up all around you, “freedom” is the only word that will come to mind. Luckily, sessions are 90 minutes long, so you aren’t limited to just one round. By the time you’re ready to leave, the kids (and you!) will be blissfully exhausted, with full hearts and memories you’ll cherish forever. But don’t go home before refueling with a hearty meal and warm beverage at the lodge.
