ASD superintendent: It will be ‘very difficult’ to restore programs, reverse cuts facing $90M budget deficit

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Anchorage School District Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt said there is no magic fix and no money to make up for a budget deficit projected at $90 million for the next school year.

“We’re trying to make up that gap, but there’s no fund balance, and it’s unlikely that the legislature will be able to invest another $700 [per student] or even anything close to that going into this year,” Bryantt said, referring to a permanent increase in per-pupil funding approved by legislators last year which Bryantt said was inadequate to cover inflation.

The district released its proposed budget on Friday, which contains cuts to almost everything including hundreds of teaching positions, all middle school sports, and popular programs like IGNITE for gifted students…
