Alaska Native artists take over the Dimond Center for annual Rondy market

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – It’s a Fur Rondy tradition that is overflowing with furs, earrings, carvings and baskets, just about anything you can think of when it comes to Alaska Native Art. This year there are more than 150 vendors at the Charlotte Jensen Native Arts Market held at the Dimond Center.

The event has been associated with Rondy in some form since the early 1980’s. Dora Buchea has been a participant since its inception.

“It’s kind of fun and you see old friends, that’s what I come for,” she said. Buchea, who was born in Savoonga, makes beautiful Siberian Yupik masks that resemble the women she grew up with complete with facial tattoos…
