University of Michigan doctor says he was suspended over views on nonbinary patient surgery

ANN ARBOR, MI — A University of Michigan surgeon is suing university officials over alleged freedom of speech and due process violations.

Dr. Steven Buchman, a tenured surgery professor at the UM Medical School in Ann Arbor, alleges the university violated his First Amendment rights and retaliated after he shared his views about craniofacial surgery on nonbinary gendered patients, according to a complaint filed Thursday, May 28, in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan.
