After a routine inspection on June 23, Wayne County abruptly dropped the weight limit on the Swan Drive Bridge, the tight little span that connects Swan Island to the rest of Grosse Ile, to just three tons. The change, which county officials say took effect immediately, is a steep fall from the previous limit of about 33 tons and is set to reshape how delivery trucks, contractors and other heavy vehicles reach the island.
The Wayne County Department of Public Services said the new posting is in place until further notice and confirmed that the bridge’s 5-mile-per-hour speed limit is sticking around. Residents and businesses with vehicles under the new three-ton cap can still use Swan Drive, while the county says it is exploring options to restore full capacity. A meeting for Swan Island residents was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Township Hall, as reported by WXYZ.
County Already Has Replacement Work In The Pipeline
Wayne County commission records indicate the county has already pushed ahead on design and replacement planning for the Swan Drive span, including a multi-year professional services agreement with Wade Trim Associates to gear up for construction. The public documents detail contract dates, subcontractor roles and funding lines that point to a longer-term bridge fix rather than a quick patch job. According to Wayne County, the contract covers testing, geotechnical work and other pre-construction services.
What Drivers And Deliveries Will Feel
The three-ton cap effectively sidelines most commercial box trucks and materials haulers from using Swan Drive. Heavier loads now have to detour to the county bridge and the northern toll bridge, adding extra time and planning for routine errands like home renovations or big deliveries. County officials stressed that marine traffic under the span is not affected and that essential services will be coordinated with the township so residents are not left in the lurch. WXYZ also reports that officials plan targeted outreach on trash collection, deliveries and emergency access.
Bridge Background
Federal bridge inventory records show the Swan Drive span dates to the mid-20th century and previously carried allowable-load postings in the high-20-ton range. It is listed as an older truss design with a narrow deck, a combination that has long caught the attention of engineers and planners. Those National Bridge Inventory records, compiled by HistoricBridges, help explain why the county has prioritized replacement planning for the island’s crossings…
