Michigan Promotes Sherrone Moore to Head Coach After Jim Harbaugh’s Departure

With national champion coach Jim Harbaugh off to the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers , Michigan is turning to a familiar face as his successor.

The Wolverines are hiring offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore as their next head coach, the university announced Friday .

Moore, 37, served as Michigan’s acting head coach during four games in the 2023 season. He went 4-0, defeating Bowling Green , Penn State , Maryland and Ohio State .

During his last three games in charge while Harbaugh served a suspension for alleged violations related to illegal in-person scouting, Moore won acclaim for his play-calling—particularly in the Wolverines’ 30–24 victory over coach Ryan Day’s Buckeyes.

Michigan will have an arduous schedule ahead of them in 2024, with games against Texas , USC , Washington , Oregon and the Buckeyes on the docket.

Before joining Harbaugh’s staff for the 2018 season, Moore coached at Louisville and Central Michigan . The Derby, Kans., native played collegiately at Oklahoma from 2006-07.
