Most of us remember from the 1993 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game that Chris Webber called a timeout when his team had none left. Donald Williams then hit four free throws, two from the technical foul on Webber plus another two on an intentional foul by Ray Jackson, to give the Tar Heels a 77-71 lead. Nobody remembers what happened after that.
With still 8 seconds left but the outcome already decided, the Wolverines still had one final possession. Webber inbounded the ball to Jalen Rose , and he took a meaningless three-pointer that missed its mark.
Rose shared what was in his mind twenty years later during those final eight seconds.
” I didn’t know if I wanted to throw it in the stands or shoot it, ” he said .
Rose thought Webber was going to take matters into his own hands
A couple of plays back, Webber saved Rose when he scored on a put-back following a missed three by Jalen. That basket put Michigan to within 71-72 with 36 seconds left. With the Tar Heels looking to waste the clock away, current Lakers GM Rob Pelinka fouled Pat Sullivan.
