HOWELL, Mich. ( WLNS ) — Michigan’s prognosticating groundhog has spoken and it looks like it will be six more weeks of winter.
Woody the Woodchuck, a female groundhog, has been making predictions for more than 20 years at the Howell Nature Center in mid-Michigan.
Phil predicts an early spring! Groundhog Day 2024
According to the Howell Nature Center, Woody “has a nearly 70% accuracy rate for her Groundhog’s Day predictions.”
The Nature Center’s Facebook page says Woody came to the nature center in 1998 after a farmer “removed” her mother and the farmer’s wife rescued Woody. She started making Groundhog’s Day predictions the following year.
Fun facts about Woody:
- She is not a morning chuck and grumbles when woken up in the morning.
- She loves corn and watermelon.
- She really enjoys packing as much bedding material into her nest box as woodchuckly possible.
- She does not like her nest to be disturbed and will let you know.
- Her favorite human calls her a “she-hulk” due to her muscular physique.
