YPSILANTI (WWJ) – Two dozen residents of an Ypsilanti apartment building were forced to evacuate their homes overnight after fire broke out in one of the units early Wednesday morning.
Ypsilanti Fire Fire Chief Ken Hobbs told WWJ’s Terri Lee Chandler that the fire broke out around 2 a.m. at the Arbor One apartments off Green Road, west of Leforge Road, near Peninsular Park in Ypsilanti on Feb. 7.
Hobbs said at 5:15 a.m. that crews responded to the scene, but when firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting through the roof of the 24-unit complex.
“We ended up with six departments there — our AMA partners, which are Ypsilanti Township and Superior and then we get Pittsville, Ann Arbor City and Ann Arbor Township,” Hobbs added.
Crews worked quickly to keep the fire from spreading and were able to contain the fire to one building where it was then extinguished.
Hobbs said firefighters were able to save the building, but some units didn’t go unscathed.
The two top apartments sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage while the units below were flooded with water.
