‘Grabbed what I could and just ran downstairs’: Red Cross assists dozens displaced in fire

YPSILANTI, MI – Andrew Schmaltz, 18, was still awake around 2 a.m. Wednesday when fire alarms sounded in his Ypsilanti apartment building. “At that point, the hallway was already full of smoke, and I had grabbed what I could and just ran downstairs,” Schmaltz said. “And then outside there was smoke but we couldn’t see fire yet so I’d gone back in and tried to get people out really, tried to get anything more, but the smoke was a bit too much.”
