Howell Big Lots location added to list of stores closing

HOWELL — Howell’s Big Lots is the latest casualty of cuts across the company.

Employees confirmed the closure, but were unable to give an exact closing date.

The discount realtor headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, had more than 1,392 stores in 48 states as of May 4, according to a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June, in which the company noted its plan to close 35-40 stores and open three others. The number of closures has since grown to almost 300, according to the brand’s website.

There were 46 stores in Michigan, with four listed as closing on the company’s website as of July 24 : Kentwood, Portage, Okemos and Ypsilanti. Stores in Big Rapids, Coldwater, Holland, Lansing, Madison Heights and Petoskey have been added to that list.

In its filing, Big Lots reported net losses in 2022, 2023 and the first quarter of 2024. The company said it’s implementing plans to reduce costs, improve sales and enhance its financial flexibility and liquidity.

The company also said it had “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue operations, leading to speculation of a potential bankruptcy filing, according to USA TODAY .
