Road rage sparks freeway shooting on I-696 in Oakland County: State Police

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) Road rage led to a freeway shooting on I-696 in Oakland County, State Police said.

In a statement on X, Michigan State Police said the Detroit Regional Communication Center received calls of a “possible freeway shooting” on eastbound I-696 near Evergreen on Saturday (8/2) at 10:20 a.m. The caller, 64 of Southfield, said a woman in a black SUV shot his car between Evergreen and Southfield.

Further investigation revealed road rage may be to blame, as a woman riding in the suspect’s vehicle had thrown a blue water bottle at the caller’s car prior to the shooting; according to police.

The suspect’s vehicle exited the freeway at Coolidge from eastbound I-696, police said.

A bullet struck the caller’s vehicle, a Ford F-250 Super Duty, once in the passenger side door. Investigators retrieved the bullet.

No injuries were reported.

The freeway was closed for an evidence search.
