GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who federal attorneys say tried to scam a victim out of $60,000 using a fake FBI arrest warrant has pleaded guilty.

Kari Melissa Morales, 51, of Milford, pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to U.S. attorneys. She faces up to 20 years in prison.

According to court documents, Morales admitted agreeing with at least one person to try to scam a Grand Rapids resident out of $60,000. She said they used fake documents, including an “FBI WARRANT OF ARREST” and “IRS RECEIPT.” She admitted she went to Grand Rapids knowing she was helping commit fraud, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office.

Morales and her co-conspirator did not know that they were actually talking with a federal law enforcement agent because the victim’s phone number had been changed to a law enforcement cell phone, the release said.

The intended victim did not lose any money in the scheme, according to U.S. attorneys.
