Midwestern magic: Jeff Daniels’ Purple Rose Theatre centers comedy in quest to draw theatergoers

CHELSEA, Mich. — When Jeff Daniels saw the newspaper headline “Office Christmas Party, Grinch in Fight with Rudolph, Police Called,” he knew he had a comedy on his hands.

“You’re always looking for that next comedic idea, and this just jumped out,” Daniels told The Blade. “As I was writing it, I just said, well … let’s try to make this the funniest play I’ve ever written.”

Office Christmas Party , Grinch in Fight with Rudolph, Police Called is directed as well as written by Daniels and began its run earlier this week at the Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea, Mich., about an hour north of Toledo between Ann Arbor and Jackson, where it will continue through Dec. 22.
