If Michigan Wants to Defeat Washington, They’ll Need to Better Incorporate Alex Orji into the Run Game

It’s no secret that Michigan QB Alex Orji has looked less than stellar throughout the first four weeks of this season. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a quick fix for the struggles we’ve seen from him. The Wolverine’s offensive line is a work in progress and leaning too heavily on Colston Loveland has its drawbacks. The more rushes Loveland compiles, the higher the chances of an injury. It would be unwise for the Wolverines to let Loveland get too fatigued this early in the season.

However, there may be an option that could provide a much-needed spark to the Wolverines’ struggling offense. It might be wise for offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell to make use of QB draws (when the quarterback takes a three-step drop, then runs vertically), rollouts (when the QB runs to one side of the offensive backfield to pass the ball or take off on a run towards the sidelines), and the tuck and run (often used when a play breaks down).

So far this season, Orji has been used primarily as a rusher, which can make the offense one-dimensional. While their record doesn’t show it, the Huskies’ defense is smart and will be watching for this. While it’s true that Michigan needs to find a balance between their running and passing game, to win on Saturday they’ll need more rushing attempts from Orji.
