MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — Some members Bedford Township community say the school district’s handling of club sports needs to be reevaluated after the deaths of 17-year-old Gwendolyn Smith and 33-year-old Ryne Leist, who the Monroe County sheriff says possibly met through the club bowling team.
“The suspect and Gwendolyn, it’s believed they had met through time as the bowling coach for the club bowling team at Bedford Public Schools,” Sheriff Troy Goodnough said during a press conference on Wednesday.
Both Smith and Leist appeared in a school yearbook photo, confirming their connection through the sport. Leist was a boys’ bowling coach and Smith was a student. Deputies say the nature of their relationship remains unclear…
