Church security expert emphasizes importance of active shooter training

WAYNE, Mich. — In the wake of a recent incident at a local church, security expert Tom Mynsberge is urging churches and other establishments to prioritize active shooter training. Mynsberge, who has trained over 100 churches in the past 25 years, said, “We never know when these things are going to happen. And it’s always best to prepare.”

The incident on Sunday in Wayne highlighted the need for vigilance and quick reaction. Mynsberge explained that during such events, “we lose five to 10 seconds trying to think, ‘Well, what should I do with this? What is really going on? Are there really shots being fired?'”

According to Wayne police, a 31-year-old suspect was stopped outside the church by a security guard and was eventually hit by a car before entering the premises. Mynsberge often uses ushers to help direct others during an active shooter situation, emphasizing the necessity of having a plan in place. “I think just about any establishment really needs to have an active shooter plan in place,” he said…
