Mom accused in Northfield Twp. killings hires new lawyer

Shuvonne Vinson, the main suspect in the Northfield Township killings and child abduction on New Year’s Day, got a new lawyer on Tuesday, July 22 — but not before she lifted up her green Washtenaw County Jail shirt in court, revealing a message on her undershirt that appeared to read: “I stand tall for Baby (name).”

The shirt named her daughter, now 5 years old, who was in foster care living with Jeffrey and Jennifer Bernhard. Vinson is accused of bringing two men with her to break into the Bernhards’ home and killing the foster mother, 48-year-old Jennifer Bernhard, and her father, Stevie Ray Smith, 74. The foster father, Jeffrey Bernhard, also was shot and severely injured but survived.

After the killings, Vinson is accused of kidnapping her daughter, whom the Free Press is not naming, and the Bernhards’ then-9-year-old daughter from the home, authorities allege. The girls were found safe that same evening…
