ANN ARBOR, MI — In the depths of the University of Michigan Research Museum Center animal sample collection off Ellsworth Road in Ann Arbor, Charlie Engelman climbs a ladder and pulls out a shark fossil.
He’s not planning to use this particular specimen — at least not today. It’s just one of the millions tucked away in drawers and cabinets, part of a vast collection that most people will never see. But Engelman sees potential in every jar, bone and sample.
