UMich ACLU hosts ‘Civil Rights in Higher Education’ town hall

The University of Michigan American Civil Liberties Union Undergraduate Chapter hosted a panel of four speakers to discuss increased campus surveillance and its implications for free speech on campus Friday evening. Panelists included Derek Peterson, chair of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs; Michael Steinberg, Law School professor and former director of the ACLU of Michigan; Stephen Ward, professor of Afroamerican and African studies; and Washtenaw County prosecutor Eli Savit.

In an interview with The Michigan Daily, LSA sophomore Lucía Peña, outreach coordinator for the U-M ACLU Undergraduate Chapter, said the event aimed to educate people about the repression of student voices and how they can work against it.

“I’m hoping that this community discussion will give us some more ideas on how we can fight for civil rights,” Peña said. “I’m hoping that the audience can learn a little bit more about how these issues could be affecting other members in their community and also what forces are trying to work against.”…
