Spread of Flock Safety cameras in Michigan raises concerns of increased surveillance

Throughout the past few years, the use of Flock Safety license plate readers has been

across Michigan. Flock Safety, a private surveillance company based in Atlanta, provides cameras and various technologies — some of which utilize artificial intelligence — to law enforcement, neighborhoods and businesses. The solar-powered license plate readers collect information on the license plate, make and model of cars, and the license plate readers connect to cellular networks to send real-time alerts to Flock clients.

Flock Safety cameras have raised concerns about the expansion of surveillance into the private lives of Americans, similarly to other surveillance systems like Detroit’s Project Green Light.
