Massive Michigan data center slated to power Oracle, OpenAI

A plan is underway to build a massive artificial intelligence data center in Washtenaw County’s Saline Township.

OpenAI, the creator of the popular artificial intelligence product ChatGPT, on Thursday, Oct. 30, made a joint announcement with software giant Oracle and an affiliate of New York-based real estate developer Related Companies that it plans to begin building the data center early next year on 250 acres in the township.

The facility would be part of OpenAI and Oracle’s “Stargate” project for AI development, and feature more than 1 gigawatt in computing capacity, or the amount of electricity it could potentially draw from the power grid.
