Ypsilanti could get social district for outdoor alcohol consumption in Depot Town

YPSILANTI, MI — Ypsilanti’s Depot Town district could see the creation of a social district where people would be allowed to consume alcoholic drinks in designated areas outdoors, with rules.

City officials are considering a request from the city’s downtown development authority to draw boundaries of social district common areas. Qualifying businesses within the district would be allowed to sell alcoholic drinks in specially marked containers, which patrons could take with them as they sip and stroll around Depot Town.

If city officials approve the DDA’s request, qualifying businesses would be able to apply for a social district permit from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and seek city approval…
